Thanks all for your comments. Ryan, I'm not sure I am really all that accepting of people with views that I adamantly disagree with, but I must accept the fact that they exist, and that I must either live with them, or become a hermit. Found, I think that the realization that we, as individuals, are small in comparison to all extends far beyond monotheistic religions. In fact, I think far eastern philosophies/religions get it better than the mid-eastern monotheistic ones, and atheism forces one to face that reality even more directly. The idea that humans are eternal is an error made by most religions, and contributes nothing positive to society.

I suppose two important acceptances of modern monotheistic religions do not need the structure of religion to hold their weight. That is: I am small in the face of all things. I am eternal.

But modern religion can be a structure to allow us to meditate on these things which in fact we do anyway (life is short, death, etc).

When I step into a grand cathedral. It is grand. I don't think about the Old Testament or miracles. It is this weight I feel.

What I get out of this (which rocks, by the way) is that it would be best to not pretend there is a god. That's where I'm putting my shekels, anyway. It's baffling to people who don't need a Fear Ghost to understand why those that do need one, uh, need one. I never found the idea too cuddly, myself.
